WINTER IS COMING: the season of dry hair and dull colours! Here's one hair treatment you need to know about if you're going to keep your mane in tip top condition - Smartbond from L'Oréal Professionnel!
Winter weather is known to wreak havoc on unsuspecting hair with its combination of harsh windy, wet and cold conditions. If you're going to keep up your hair colour regime during this time, Smartbond is a great way to give your hair the extra protection it needs to stay at its best.
Smartbond is an in-salon only treatment implemented in two parts, and specially designed to strengthen and protect your hair during technical services (such as lightening and hair colour). With input from our long-term partnerships with hairdressers, L'Oréal's Research & Innovation Department used its 100 years of scientific expertise and long-standing knowledge in high-performance hair care to create Smartbond.
So how does it work?
Smartbond strengthens your hair as you colour it. A Smartbond additive is added to your dye in salon, and the colour is then mixed and applied as normal. When the colour is ready the hair is rinsed and Smartbond is applied as a pre-shampoo and left on for 10 minutes. This is then rinsed and shampoo and conditioner is applied as normal.
What are the benefits of Smartbond?
It targets weaker parts of the hair bond to strengthen and limit stress to keep the bond intact. It improves the overall finish of your hair colour as it helps it to take more evenly. It helps to reconstruct the weak ion bonds to reverse the feel of damaged hair. It doesn't affect your colour at all as it adapts to different colour products. To begin your journey towards soft and strong colour corrected hair in winter, enquire at Rokstar about Smartbond.
Going blonde for the summer is a popular makeover choice for Australian women. It’s a great way to imitate (and improve on) the natural hair lightening that occurs during the hot and sunny summer months, as well as a way to signal to oneself that winter is finally over. If you’re thinking of taking the plunge, here’s what you need to know to make the most of your transformation.
The first thing you’ll need to decide is what kind of blonde to go for, as each shade will have different implications in terms of upkeep, impact as well as suitability.
SUBTLE – If you’re looking to subtly brighten your look and have dark hair you can add subtle Ombré or two-toned highlights. If you have dark skin, these chocolate and caramel shades will suit your skin tone.
NATURAL – Shades of natural blonde, such as strawberry, honey, or beige are the best picks for a natural look. If you want your hair to look like you’ve just returned from a fabulous vacation, this is for you.
BOLD – you don’t get bolder than platinum blonde. This popular shade can have an ash grey tint (with balayage), or you can make it even edgier by integrating shades of silver. This look is not for the faint hearted!
Once you’ve selected your ideal shade, get in touch with us, and get ready to look fabulous!
Working with Brisbane’s best stylists for event worthy hair is as simple as booking an appointment witha reputable salon. Of course, if you truly want to look your best at a wedding or party, we have some advice you should follow before coming to your salon appointment. These tips will ensure that you’ll be absolutely thrilled with the end result of your styling experience.
- Ask for proof
The last thing you want is to fork over your hard-earned dollars for a hairstyle that looks cheap and unattractive, or that you could have done yourself at home. Before you choose a hair stylist, ask to see previous examples of their handiwork. Or you can have a look on their Facebook or Instagram feeds.
- Don’t wait until the last minute
Book an appointment with your salon the moment you’ve officially RSVP’d your attendance. This will ensure your preferred stylist is available on the day. If you have a specific style in mind, it’s a good idea to speak to your stylist in advance so they can let you know what to expect, and how longyour session will be. Taking these steps will make sure that you’re relaxed and ready hours before the event.
- Be practical
Keep your event conditions in mind when thinking about a hairstyle. If you’re going to be seated in an air-conditioned venue for the duration of your evening, you can play with ornate and dramatic styles or updos. However, if you’re going to be MC’ing an event or spending time on a packed dancefloor, you’ll need a style that resists sweating, heat, and movement.
- Ask for advice
Be sure to ask your stylist for pointers on how you can keep your hairstyle looking great for your entire evening, or even for a day or two. Some people get their hair done in preparation for an activity packed weekend, and with the right instruments and products could extend the lifespan of your style a bit longer, which means you’ll get to enjoy great hair for days.
Follow the above tips and you can look forward to great, selfie worthy hair at your upcoming event, without any of the usual stress or fuss.
Why choose non-traditional keratin hair straightening? Here’s what it can do for your hair that traditional treatments cannot!
Every person wants to enjoy a lifetime’s worth of good hair days, but when your hair is uncontrollable, tangled or dull looking, tending to it and styling it can become a chore. If you’re sick of spending hours taming your hair into submission with complicated and expensive hair products and tools, you’ve probably considered undergoing a traditional keratin straightening treatment, but did you know that non-traditional straightening treatments can be a better option?
Traditional keratin hair treatments make your hair straight and flat, and can also make your hair soft, smooth and more manageable. A traditional keratin straightening treatment works by breaking down the bonds in your hair to straighten them. Once this is done your hair is smoother and straighter, and you will also experience shorter drying and styling times, andless frizz, even in rainy or humid weather. However, one area that traditional treatments fall short in, is in dealing with damaged hair. Some people even find that a keratin straightening treatment leads to more knots and breakage, as well as general damage. It’s for this reason that people with very curly hair, recently bleached/dyed hair, or unhealthy hair, are dissuaded from a keratin treatment, or are cautioned to expect less dramatic results.
Other potential pitfalls that can come from pursuing a keratin straightening treatment is for it to truly benefit you, you need to choose the best quality product that doesn’t use high amounts of potentially dangerous ingredients, like formaldehyde. You will also need to make sure that the salon and hairdresser applying the product are trained in working with the product in question.
We strongly advise against attempting to do your own keratin treatment at home!
If you’re ever in Brisbane, you can always visit Rokstar Hair for a non-traditional keratin straightening treatment. We personally recommend and offer the AGI Keratin Straightening treatment offering, as it leaves the hair’s chemical structure intact by sealing each strand with a natural keratin coating. The coat creates shinier and stronger strands, anda healthier head of hair. As it’s a treatment that works with even colour treated, processed, and damaged hair, we recommend it as a great alternative to most traditional hair straightening treatments currently being offered on the market.
This month I have been… as proud as can be! Rokstarand I have been nailing it in the crazy world of hairdressing industry awards! Spanning business, creative and educational categories, I am so pumped that we have made the finals in absolutely everything we entered!
In the business focussed Australian Hair Industry Awards we have made the finals for… (drum roll please)
- In Salon Training, which reflects all of the hard work that my team and I put in before and after hours to be the very best we can be
- Business Director of the Year – as it suggests, this awards a successful business owner who is making waves in the industry (I think that’s me!)
- Queensland State Salon of the Year – this category is about my whole team and how we pull together to create a place that you all want to keep coming back to time and again
In addition, I made the finals of the Australian FAME Team, which is a year-long programme of knock-out opportunities to be mentored by industry legends both in Australia and in the UK and to appear on stage at hair exhibitions in Sydney and London. I recently went to Sydney where I had to complete three unseen hair styling and haircut challenges, in addition to presenting a model live on stage and answer some questions posed by some of the biggest names in the Australian hair industry. Nervous? Just a little bit!
Finally I have made the final six in Queensland Hairdresser of the Year at the Australian Hair Fashion Awards, one of our industry’s premier photographic and creative awards competitions. My collection called ‘Existential’ is one of only six in Queensland to be chosen to make the finals amongst some amazing company and many of my friends – needless to say I am BEYOND excited!

The AHIA awards are announced in Brisbane on 26 March while FAME and AHFA are announced on 2 April in Sydney, so stay tuned and keep it all crossed for me!!!!!
